How being different can beat being better

How being different can beat being betterHow being different can beat being betterI always thought that the best wins at anything. That might be true for sports. But not for life and business. If youre trying to build a profitable business or stable career, you might be approaching it all wrong. At least, I was. And I think that the common belief about success is also totally wrong.I get it when it comes to sports. Theres only one place at the top. And to get to the top, you have to be the best. I only applaud that. In fact, Im inspired by athletes like LeBron James, Christiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, and others. But business is different. Instead of being the best, you must strive for becoming the first. Al Ries and Jack Trout put it best in their classic marketing book, The 22 Immutable Laws Of MarketingEveryone is interested in whats new. Few people are interested in whats better.Who cares about a marginally better product or service? Thats the problem with most businesses and eve n people. We compete with each other for the same market. Thats the basic idea behind Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Rene Mauborgne. The authors argue that most companies find themselves in markets with too much competition, called red oceans. They writeBlue ocean strategy challenges companies to break out of the red ocean of bloody competition by creating uncontested market space that makes the competition irrelevant. Instead of dividing up existing- and often shrinking- demand and benchmarking competitors, blue ocean strategy is about growing demand and breaking away from the competition. But how do you break away from the competition?Be different.I look at entrepreneurship like the music industry. Every artist that is at the top of the charts is different from everyone else. Theres only one Drake, Rihanna, Lady von sinnen. These artists didnt try to become better versions of Jay-Z, Madonna, Beyonce, or whoever came before them. No, they created their own genre.Drake is the first rapper that sings and who gets away with it. Rihanna broke out with a song called Pon de Replay which is a combination between pop and reggae, a new sound. Lady Gaga, well, she doesnt need an introduction. Shes Lady Gaga and you cant compare her with anything. You see, its not about being better, its about being different. And when youre different, youre often the first in a new category.Tim Ferriss was the first lifestyle entrepreneur. He popularized the idea in his book, The Four Hour Work Week. Did he invent the idea? Who cares? Hes known for it.Al Ries and Jack Trout sayWhen you launch a new product, the first question to ask yourself is not How is this new product better than the competition? but First what? In other words, what category is this new product first in?You can apply this to your career as well. Scott Adams, creator of the comic strip Dilbert, is the first cartoonist that writes about life advice and business. Hes different. And hes the first.Dont ask yourself , What am I better at?Ask, How am I different? The easiest way to be different is to combine skills that are new in a certain area. I also learned that idea from Scott Adams in his book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big Kind of the Story of My Life. (I love that title, btw.)Adams says that every skill you acquire, doubles your odds of success. He writesNotice I didnt say anything about the level of proficiency you need to achieve for each skill. I didnt mention anything about excellence or being world-class. The idea is that you can raise your market value by being merely good- not extraordinary- at more than one skill.Adams strategy is practical, and more importantly Realistic.Anyone can become different in their field become becoming better at one or more of the following skills (check out Scott Adams book for a more comprehensive list)Writing Were all writers. And by writing well you can stand out from the crowd.Public Speaking Getting comfortable with speaking in front of a group makes you a better leader.Selling We all have something to sell Our art, products, services, and even ourselves. Can you think of a surgeon that can also write and speak well? Atul Gawande, the author The Checklist Manifesto comes to mind.Think different.I know, its been used to death, but the old Apple commercial hits the nail on the head. Once you get the concept, you start noticing the patterns everywhere. Think different is not some marketing slogan. Its at the core of success. Every business or person that succeeds is because they did SOMETHING different. The question now is What are YOU going to do differently? This article first appeared on Dariusforoux.com.

6 things recruiters are looking for in 2018

6 things recruiters are looking for in 20186 things recruiters are looking for in 2018In a perfect world, wed gently glide from one gig to the next with dignity and skill sets intact. In the sometimes dog-eat-dog world of job hunting though, you have to create a version of yourself that both highlights your skills and jumps off the screen at recruiters. These are some of the skills recruiters will be actively seeking in potential candidates in the year ahead1. Where you are coming fromAn emerging trend is recruiting from very specific hintergrunds. Shift concentrates on military transitions, and CEO Mike Slagh says that military personnel can help launch technology-focused careers through predictive job matching technology and immersive fellowship programs. To that end, when placing a veteran, they look at hard skills, soft skills, preferences and culture, and consider these characteristics more relevant than ever before. Someone with a background in the military might be able to fit into a rigid corporate structure that might be too tight of a fit for someone else.2. A balance of hard and soft skillsYoure a tech genius and extremely science savvy - yay, you But, you cant meet peoples eyes during conversation and tend to mumble during presentations big boo. Or the flip side, youre a smooth talker and can engage anyone in conversation, but you need constant hand-holding when it comes to figuring out how to create a PowerPoint.Regardless of the industry, Its no secret that hiring managers are increasingly looking for technology-, analytics-, and computer science-savvy professionals, said Don Bossi, president of STEM education nonprofit FIRST, who works with companies including Boeing, NASA and Lego. That said, So-called soft skills are also critically important, and include teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills, according to Bossi.3. The best fit for the job (over the long haul)Sometimes its leid enough for you to think youre the pe rfect candidate for any gig, if you dont meet some unseen or unknown criteria theyll probably go with someone else. Quality recruiting is not just about finding the person with the best skill set, but also about finding the best fit for thejob and company from a work culture perspective according to Laura Platt,Director of Human Resources forSpreadshirt,a global e-commerce company. It isnt always just the skills though, Its important to determine the kinds of personalities that will getalong with one another, according to Platt, and we aim to find applicants who will encourage teamwork and contribute to acollaborative environment. And one more thing It is imperative to look for the necessary applicant skills that will be needed not just fortoday, but also for the future.4. Listen upSometimes very specific soft skills will be the ones that set you apart. You may be so busy talking about yourself that you miss the fact that some recruiters want to see just how well you can listen. How great are you at communicating your needs? How well do you manage a team?As someone who has hired hundreds of people over the past 38 years, I have always screened for communication skills, especially listening and verbal skills, stressed Brad Neuenhaus, Chief Business Officer of MindEdge. Neuenhaus also listed critical thinking and business process improvement skills as being crucial for new hires.5. Theyll search in unexpected placesNot all recruiters go through mountains of resumes or LinkedIn profiles - some look for hidden clues instead as Laura Hanson, CHRO of Sphera explained Whats important in the search is knowing who your company is and what behaviors make people successful at the company. Hanson said she finds success in hiring for tech by looking in non-traditional places for candidates with the right soft skills. She notes that veterans, working mothers and recent graduates have fantastic skills and behaviors and can be brought up to speed on the tech.6. If you match y our message to the mediumWith apologies to Marshall McLuhan, recruiters will be looking to see if you can find a way to communicate in an effective manner no matter the method of communication. With text-initial interviewing on the rise (thats an entirely different article) prospects have to learn to be succinct by sharing clear and tight responses, according to Aman Brar, CEO of text-based startup Canvas. Theres no reason to be verbose when interviewing in person and the same is true for screening over text. Save long answers for follow up interviews and keep things pithy and informational to start.

Its OK to ask for help Were all in this together

Its OK to ask for help Were all in this togetherIts OK to ask for help Were all in this togetherIts easy to imagine that our role models, leaders, and other highly successful people have it all together. No big career mistakes, no missteps, no faceplants.Ive also noticed that strong, accomplished women are especially adept at hiding when things arent going well. This has been on my mind a lot since I heard the heartbreaking news about Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. When youre used to routinely moving mountains, alchemizing ideas into results, rallying troops, and powering through roadblocks, it can be hard to acknowledge that youre struggling. Tough to admit it to yourself, and almost inconceivable to admit it to others. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with, and cured of, breast cancer. After I recovered, I found myself drifting and without goals for the first time since I can recall. Even though I was being a self-care champion, I found it hard to fully focus on my work. I recognized that I was dealing with survivors guilt. At dinner one night with my new friend, Cat, I opened up about everything. Without any judgement, she referred me to a truly awesome therapist. Exactly what I needed. Its OK to admit youre struggling. Its OK to ask for help. Its OK to accept help. One more thing Check in on your friends and colleagues. (Even that slightly intimidating, amazing, courageous woman who is making sht happen and always looks like she has it together.) Ask if they are OK. Be willing to listen, and if necessary, act. Were all in this together.Thisarticleoriginally appeared onBeLeaderly.com.

6 JavaScript Interview Questions

6 JavaScript Interview Questions6 JavaScript Interview QuestionsThe growing popularity of JavaScript has led to an unprecedented demand for those who are experts at the ins and outs of this interpreted programming language. If youre a JavaScript developer whos looking for a job, you need to be prepared for specific JavaScript interview questions.Despite the fact that experienced JavaScript developers are in high demand, interviews are more like an audition ansicht days. Employers hiring JavaScript developers not only want to know what you know, but how youll go about solving the task at hand. The first step is to create an erreichbar portfolio with trending elements that utilize JavaScript. The interview may be likened to one big puzzle Employers may not necessarily ask you to write code during the interview, but they definitely want to see your problem-solving abilities in action.Mark Passinetti, lead recruiter for Robert Half Technology in Bellevue, WA, said. Were seeing more functi onal interviews that place the candidate in front of a white board, demonstrating how theyd solve a particular problem. Candidates can expect to be front and center as they illustrate their experience and knowledge on the core competencies of JavaScript. To prepare yourself for the interview, dont solely focus on what questions to expect. According to Passinetti, its more important to make aya you have a solid understanding of the latest JavaScript trends, so you can be prepared for all types of interview scenarios.Looking for a developer job?SEARCH IT JOBSJavaScript lends itself very well to self-study, said Passinetti. One of the best things candidates can do to prepare for interviews is to get involved with developer communities, such as Stack Overflow and GitHub. Be on the lookout for opportunities to collaborate with other developers online and practice your JavaScript skills and problem-solving abilities. In terms of specific JavaScript interview questions, heres a few you can e xpect1. Please demonstrate that you understand object-oriented design concepts. Its critical for JavaScript candidates to show that they know how to write structured code. More employers are asking to see examples of code during the interview.2. Tell me about your favorite JavaScript frameworks and utilities.Employers are not too concerned with your preferences here they mainly want to know that youre keeping up with the latest JavaScript trends and knowledge. Ideally, they want candidates with broad knowledge of multiple JavaScript frameworks, such as jQuery, Ext JS, YUI and others.3. How do you organize your JavaScript code? With this question, employers are trying to get an idea of how the candidate maintains and designs code. For example, do they use the module pattern or class inheritance to build reusable code? This also gives employers insight as to whether they design code thats specific to an application with no opportunity to reuse.4. What would you do if your audience had J avaScript turned off?Companies want to ensure their apps work no matter what the circumstances, so this question allows candidates to illustrate how theyd make certain their code works.5. What is event bubbling in the DOM?The goal of this question is to ensure the candidate knows what order events will be propagated in the DOM. This provides an opportunity to discuss event models outside the DOM and look for techniques popularized with different frameworks.6. How do you debug your JavaScript code?Firebug and Chrome DevTools are two of the most frequently used, but again, most employers are not too concerned with what tools you use to debug your code. They mainly want to see how you go about solving this issue.According to the Robert Half Technology Salary Guide, entry-level JavaScript developer salaries will increase this year. The bottom line is that JavaScript candidates who have a solid understanding of specific frameworks paired with on-the-job experience will have the best ch ance at landing a coveted JavaScript role.Once your online portfolio is developed and you spend time getting entrenched in JavaScript developer online sites, youre on your way to acing that interview.

Engineering your career

Engineering your career Engineering your careerPosted July 26, 2013, by Julia Watters Its Australian Engineering Weekfrom 5-11 August 2013, with engineering-related events, site tours and activities nation-wide. That may be great news for engineering students and professionals, but what about the rest of you? If youre not even sure of what engineers do, nows your time to find out. Engineering is an incredibly diverse and dynamic area, but for laypersons it may all seem like a bit of a mystery. Were here to shine a light on this exciting area, and possibly inspire you to explore it further. Heres a snapshot of the disciplines Engineering Australia is highlighting this year as part of Australian Engineering Week Civil engineering Many people think of engineers as people who build bridges and buildings and this is certainly part of what civil engineers in particular do. Civil engineering is probably the fruchtwein widely known form of engineering. It is also known as structural enginee ring and is responsible for the worlds iconic man-made landmarks. Civil engineering draws on a number of other engineering disciplines to create things like roads, bridges, canals, dams and buildings. Average annual salary $122,352 Major employers include government agencies, builders and architects, land management firms and utility companies. Resource engineering Resource engineers, similar to environmental engineers, develop more sustainable methods of using and managing natural resources. This type of engineering protects cities from over-pollution and contamination and is pivotal to public health initiatives. Resource engineers develop efficient methods for recycling, water disposal, sustainability, solid waste management, water supply treatment and air pollution management. Average annual salary $121,812 Major employers include government management bodies, mining and forest industries, civil engineering and construction companies. Geotechnical engineering Geotechnical enginee ring works in conjunction with a range of other engineering fields as it is used to assess earth materials, foundations and site conditions before construction can commence. These engineers calculate the risk of earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flow and rockfalls. If a site is deemed suitable, they help determine the foundations required for any structure based on soil and rock mechanics. Average annual salary $132,645 Major employers include geotechnical engineering firms, gold, coal and metal ore mining companies. Pharmaceutical engineering Pharmaceutical engineers design and operate the machinery used to produce medicinal products. These products are often manufactured on an exceedingly small scale and their production requires extreme precision. Pharmaceutical engineers play a key component in drug development and work alongside medical researchers. Average annual salary (mechanical engineer) $107,453 Major employers include pharmaceutical companies. Aerospace engineering Aerospace engineers are responsible for the aircraft, aerospace vehicles and propulsion systems used in aviation. This includes aeronautical engineering, for aircraft within the Earths atmosphere, and astronautical engineering, for spacecrafts. Average annual salary $95,303 Major employers include civil aviation safety authority, airline companies, government defence departments and defence forces. Computer systems engineering Computer systems engineering integrates electronic engineering and computer science for the development of computer hardware and software.
